Maybe we live at the dawn of the time of true artificial intelligence (AI).
In this talk, Prof. Tonio Ball will give an overview of the technology that is driving the current AI revolution: Deep Learning with artificial neural networks, a variant of machine learning that takes its inspiration from the structure and function of nervous systems.
He will outline key differences between the deep learning paradigm compared to traditional machine learning approaches. Deep learning has been hugely successful in computer vision and natural language processing.
In the second part of the talk, the works of Prof. Balls research group will be described. These are the works on how deep learning can be adapted for the analysis of brain signals, our recent insights on how brain signals are internally represented in deep artificial networks – i.e., how human brain activity looks "through the eyes" of artificial neural networks.
We will consider examples of how the convergence of deep learning and advanced neurotechnology, including neuromorphic computing, can help in healthcare, for example by diagnostic or robotic assistive devices for a wide range of patients.
